Week 3 Preview: Trends Forming

Even though it is still a small sample size, we can finally start using this year’s statistics to get an insight into the upcoming games. College Football tends to unpredictable, but it is still fun to try and find an advantage when picking games. Not a ton of great games this week, but we sure do have a big one in Happy Valley. I’m already nervous.

(10) Penn State vs (22) Auburn (7:30)

Gameday is back in town for another Whiteout game. Win or lose, Penn State usually plays their best in these games. Auburn is averaging 61 points per game so far, but they have yet to play a real team. Akron does not count either. That doesn’t mean they are not good, because they are. Tank Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter are two really good running backs. Our defensive line has been great so far, but I am definitely concerned about this offensive line and that duo. I don’t think Bo Nix is great, but if we can’t stop the run he should be able to find open receivers.

It’s hard to gauge Auburn’s defense so far, with the opponents they have played. They were decent last year, but not incredible. I like our play makers on the outside against most defenses in the country. It is a matter of if the line holds up and Clifford has a good game. Both big ifs. I have been impressed with Penn State so far, which is unexpected. I think this can go either way, but the crowd has shown to make a difference for these Whiteout games.

Final Score: Penn State 28 Auburn 24

(3) Oklahoma vs Nebraska (12:00)

I think this will be a blood bath, but I also though USC was going to destroy Stanford. And we all saw what happened there.

Final Score: Oklahoma 51 Nebraska 27

(8) Cincinnati vs Indiana (12:00)

Cincinnati is another team who has yet to really face any competition. They sleepwalked their way through Murray State last week. Indiana bounced back after the Iowa beating, which doesn’t look as bad now. The Bearcats have been a bit vulnerable against the run so far this year, allowing 131 ypg. The Hoosiers will probably try to establish the run, because Penix has not been good so far. He has thrown three interceptions and two touchdowns. This spread seems a bit low to me, which gives me pause, but I’ve said before I don’t believe in the Hoosiers.

Final Score: Cincinnati 30 Indiana 20

(15) Virginia Tech @ West Virginia (12:00)

The Mountaineers are actually the slight favorite here. The Hokies weakness so far has been against the pass, where they rank 94th nationally so far. West Virginia has a nice group of receivers, so they could be in for a good game. If West Virginia can keep Burmeister in the pocket I think they will win this one.

Final Score: West Virginia 24 Virginia Tech 21

(24) Miami vs Michigan State (12:00)

Definitely intrigued by this match up. Miami got lit up by Alabama, and narrowly escaped against App State. Three weeks in and they are certainly battle tested. The Spartans look revitalized so far under Tucker. Kenneth Walker has been electric at running back, averaging over ten yards per carry. If Sparty can keep King from busting off big runs, I think they can pull off the upset.

Final Score: Michigan State 33 Miami 28

(12) Notre Dame vs Purdue (2:30)

The luck of the Irish has been in so far this year. Notre Dame could just as easily be 0-2. Their defense has been especially suspect, ranking 62nd against the pass, and 107th against the run. Purdue hasn’t done much on the ground this year, but Jack Plummer has six touchdown pass and no interceptions. I think Notre Dame wins this one in a similar fashion as their first two games. Another nail biter.

Final Score: Notre Dame 38 Purdue 31

(1) Alabama vs (11) Florida (3:30)

Florida hasn’t played anyone yet and Emory Jones has thrown four interceptions already. He will probably make a few really good plays on the ground, but he has to play a perfect game to win here. The crowd may help, but I doubt it.

Alabama 38 Florida 17

USC @ Washington State (3:30)

The Trojans finally let Helton go. Not sure why that program can’t get a decent coach. Franklin is not going there either. Rolovich can shove it.

Final Score: USC 37 Washington State 17

(2) Georgia vs South Carolina (7:00)o

Suth Carolina is 2-0, and a 30 point underdog. That tells you all you need to know about this one.

Final Score: Georgia 42 South Carolina 7

(21) North Carolina vs Virginia (7:30)

I have been less than impressed with the Tar Heels so far this year. They should have lost that game to Virginia Tech by way more. I think they pull this one out, but it’s not easy.

Final Score: North Carolina 38 Virginia 35

(17) Ole Miss vs Tulane (8:00)

This has all the makings of a shoot out. Tulane scored 35 against Oklahoma, then put up 69 against Morgan State. Ole Miss has been playing much better defense then they usually do so far. Tulane also gave up 40 to Oklahoma. Ole Miss’ offense is on equal footing with the Sooners in my opinion. Hopefully this is a fun one.

Final Score: Ole Miss 48 Tulane 30

Boise State vs Oklahoma State (9:00)

If Spencer Sanders is out again I doubt the Cowboys can win this game. Even with him I’d give the Broncos the slight edge.

Final Score: Boise State 30 Oklahoma State 21

(19) Arizona State @ (23) BYU (10:15)

BYU came through for me last week, and I really want to back them again, but I think Jayden Daniels will make enough plays to get a tough road win for the Sun Devils.

Final Score: Arizona State 31 BYU 27

Once the college football train gets moving it is impossible to stop. Here we are already at week 3 with full steam ahead. Now, if we could just away with this summer weather we can really get in the flow of things.

Have Fun, Be Safe, We Are!!.
